A TICKET TO CAREER, Veronica Pavlova, Anna Grabovskaya, Ilya Kurmyshev
Master of Business Administration (MBA) program has been acquiring an increasingly growing population lately. Every now and then the most diverse people say thoughtfully, "It is necessary to work for five years more and to get an MBA degree somewhere afterwards."
MBA is often perceived as a stage of education necessary for the career like availability of a higher education certificate, desirably from a decent higher educational institution. Is this so?
HISTORY OF THE MATTER
In general, availability of MBA degree implies an ability to be an efficient middle-ranking and top-ranking manager.

SELL NOT A PRODUCT BUT A DREAM AND WISHES!
Why do some companies that have just appeared on the market acquire popularity immediately and attract sincere interest of the buyers? Why do other companies that struggle for their existence industriously and for a long time have to quit the market nonetheless? It is stupid to believe that everything that happens in life is just a matter of chance and luck. It would be absolutely wrong to state, “This is fate. Some people get everything and others get nothing.” It is quite obvious now that success of a company is an accurately considered plan of actions, a huge quantity of applied knowledge and effort.

INTERVIEW OF PROFESSOR AND RECTOR OF THE STOCKHOLM SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS IN RUSSIA ANDERS LILJENBERG
What is the difference and specific of Swedish and Russian systems of business teaching and methods?
At present, the Stockholm School of Economics is in a more privileged position in comparison to other business schools in Russia that has started carrying out international exchange and integration into the global business community just a few years ago. This fact also gives us a right to approach the "new" ideas appearing both in business and in the process of education from a more critical stance. In the Stockholm School of Economics we follow new trends very seldom before we receive confirmation that they really work. Along with this, if something really valuable appears we are well prepared to get the maximum benefit from this both for ourselves and for participants of our programs.

A DIFFICULT AGE
Career How to reach heights and not to fall down
Career of a manager is always an individual business life path. However, psychologists and recruiters do single out several stages in establishment of a manager that are closely interconnected with the life cycles of a person’s development. Each of the stages is accompanied by its own crisis.
Andrei Davydov,
General Director of Alfa Personal consulting group
“Between 1995 and 1998, I participated in establishment, opening and development of a retail chain of stores of mobile electronics. I was younger than 25 then. Retail business was only emerging then and it was a new and incomprehensible system of trade. Responsibility was colossal! I worked myself off by 100%. In four years I received a huge experience that helped me to open my own business later.”
Alexei Popov,
Director of Executive MBA General Management program of the Stockholm School of Economics
“The managers who are really kin on building of career study any opportunity to climb a step higher than the occupied position attentively. From this standpoint a course of career planning read to students of MBA helps to have a new look at your own capabilities and methods of behavior in the business space.”
Zhanna Bunimovich,
psychologist
“Respect, recognition and money – all this does not save people from psychological problems connected with natural reconstruction of organism. This leads to the "crisis of the middle of life" when they start summing up the results of what have been done and, understanding that further promotion is impossible start seeking the ways to get adjusted to the new situation. Mastering of new areas of activity and transition to horizontal career is a way out."

MBA programmes with sparkle
Courses that are tailored to a local niche market offer a great deal for communities and students alike, says Peter Brown.
From oil and gas to champagne and fashion, more and more business schools are tailoring their MBA and Masters courses to local resources or areas of expertise. As well as the basics – marketing, accounting and strategy – they offer specialist elective courses highly geared to a local speciality. In a way, such schools are being faithful to their roots. Though the trend now is towards internationalism, business education began in order to supply local training.

WILL ECONOMIC SITUATION IN SWEDEN SERVE AS A LESSON FOR THE US?
American government is looking for a way out of the situation that many economists call the most serious financial crisis since the times of Depression. In any case, they may quite learn a lesson from another painful banking crisis that cost big losses.
A big real estate bubble broke in Sweden at the beginning of the 1990s and brought turmoil to Scandinavian economy leaving behind the broken financial companies, collapsed organizations and crowds of unemployed.

So far, MBA programs bring the main revenue to majority of them, whereas in Europe everything is vice versa (see the graph). In any case, we are on the right path. School for General Managers
Sweden is exporting not only its goods and services. For the first glance the activities of the Stockholm School of Economics can be nominally considered as educational services. But only because of such wording as “knowledge export” does not appear in official papers – however the core of SSE activities can be explained only by these two words.
Stockholm School of Economics, Russia has been working in Russian Federation for more than ten years, it becomes more and more popular and it means that the knowledge, delivered to the participants is more than useful. This education is not cheap. What for are businessmen, who know value of money, ready to pay? Expert magazine prepared an interview with the Dean of the Stockholm School of Economics, Russia
Anders Liljenberg.

TO COME INTO FOCUS, Anna Postnikova
Demand for the focus programs adjusted to needs of a certain company is growing on the market of business education.
Education for corporate clients is one of the most dynamically developing and promising segments of the Russian market of business education. Increase of requirements to competence of employees against the background of deficit of qualified human resources in the regions of rapid economic growth provides for steady demand for business education programs composed according to orders of certain companies. Players of the market of business education pointed out that whereas only large Western companies did corporate education initially, in the last five years large and even small but rapidly growing Russian companies understood the need for establishment of corporate universities. ...

THE BUSINESS EDUCATION MARKET OF ST. PETERSBURG IS AT A STAGE OF EVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT
The established circle of the main players does not feel any serious competitive pressure on the part of Moscow-based and foreign institutes yet. They prefer either working in niche segments or not noticing the market of St. Petersburg at all.
Not a single representative of the educational business polled by RBC daily noticed their serious influence on the situation and growth of prices by 10-15% in 2007 passed unnoticed for the enrollees not spoilt by high competition.

THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS A SERIOUS RATING OF MBA IN ST. PETERSBURG, Yulia Vymyatnina
RATINGS OF BUSINESS SCHOOLS CAUSE MANY DISPUTES AND EVE CONFLICTS ALL OVER THE WORLD. ON THE ONE HAND, THEIR GOAL IS GIVING OF USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT OFFERS ON THE MARKET TO THE CONSUMER. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE RATING ITSELF IS A PRODUCT QUALITY OF WHICH CAN BE OFTEN QUESTIONED.
RBC daily in cooperation with THI Selection tried to take the first step towards creation of a rating in St. Petersburg being interesting for the consumer and being simultaneously recognized by business schools as satisfying the minimal requirements of objectiveness.
The first and probably the most important parameter of success of the schools that we decided to study was growth in wages of graduates after graduation from a school. For obtaining of data we followed two paths: (1) polling of graduates on the website of RBC, (2) selection from the database of a recruiting company, namely THI Selection. As a result, the data turned out to be sufficient, for instance, for evaluation of an average effect of obtaining of an MBA certificate on the salary of a manager but insufficient for statistically correct separation of the effects of salaries growth according to schools. There is a hope that this task will e fulfilled in 2009. Out view at the ratings, description of the research and its results are presented in the present article.

EXPERT FOR RUSSIA ADVISES MOSCOW TO ACT TO COOL ITS ECONOMY
Russia needs to take measures to cool its economy in the near future to slow down the speed of inflation growth and to prevent problems that are more serious. Anders Aslund, a senior fellow of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a specialist in Russia, expressed such opinion in his article published by The Financial Times.
According to Aslund, an extraordinary global boom is ending and the world faces the twin specters of declining growth and rising inflation. In the US and Europe, recession is the dominant worry, as economic growth dwindles and the credit squeeze bites. Emerging markets, by contrast, are still enjoying high growth rates and their main concern is inflation.
